Who is a good candidate for plastic/cosmetic surgery?

What is the best age to have plastic surgery?

Is plastic surgery safe?

What does it mean for a surgeon to be board-certified?

Who is a good candidate for plastic/cosmetic surgery?

Plastic/cosmetic surgery can be an option for people who have specific aesthetic goals that they would like to achieve. However, the decision to undergo plastic/cosmetic surgery should always be carefully considered and made in consultation with a qualified and experienced plastic/cosmetic surgeon. Some good candidates for surgery include individuals who have realistic expectations, are in good health, are at a stable weight, have a specific cosmetic goal, and have realistic financial expectations. It's important to remember that each person's situation is unique, and the decision to undergo plastic/cosmetic surgery should be made in consultation with a qualified and experienced board-certified surgeon. The surgeon can help determine whether plastic/cosmetic surgery is a good option and recommend the best course of treatment for each individual. At Top Aesthetics, we ensure that all our patients are optimal candidates for surgery by employing a rigorous preoperative evaluation. This evaluation includes photo simulations, which enable our surgeons to communicate clearly about surgical possibilities and meet the patient's expectations.

What is the best age to have plastic surgery?

The decision to undergo plastic surgery is personal and can vary depending on individual circumstances. There isn't a specific "best" age for everyone to have plastic surgery because each person's goals and needs differ. However, there are some factors to consider when thinking about the timing of plastic surgery:

  • Physical maturity: For most types of plastic surgery, it is generally recommended to wait until physical development is complete.
  • Emotional maturity: It is essential to have a realistic understanding of plastic surgery's potential benefits and limitations. Emotional maturity and a stable mindset are crucial for making informed decisions about altering one's appearance.
  • Health status: The individual's overall health plays a significant role in determining candidacy for plastic surgery. Being in good general health is important to reduce the risks associated with surgery and ensure proper healing.
  • Specific goals: The timing of plastic surgery may depend on the specific procedure and the individual's goals.

The decision should be made after considering the potential risks, benefits, and personal circumstances carefully. It is crucial to consult with a qualified board-certified plastic surgeon who can evaluate your case and provide guidance based on your unique needs and goals.

What does it mean for a surgeon to be board-certified?

Board certification in medical specialties refers to a voluntary process undertaken by physicians to demonstrate their expertise, proficiency, and commitment to a specific medical specialty or subspecialty beyond their basic medical education and licensing. To become board-certified, physicians must meet the requirements of a medical specialty board associated with the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or relevant certifying organizations in their country.

The board certification process typically involves completing a residency program in the chosen specialty, successfully passing rigorous written and oral examinations, and demonstrating high clinical competence. These medical professionals must also adhere to ethical standards and commit to lifelong learning through continuing medical education (CME), reevaluation, and recertification.

The primary purpose of board certification is to ensure that doctors meet stringent standards regarding knowledge, experience, and expertise in their field, leading to improved patient care, safety, and medical outcomes. It helps patients, hospitals, and healthcare providers identify and select physicians with specialized skills and training. Board certification indicates a physician's dedication to their specialty, and embodies a commitment to staying current on medical advancements, ultimately benefiting patients and the healthcare system.

How does anesthesia work?

Can I continue to take my medication?

What are some of the complications that can occur after surgery?

How do I prepare for plastic surgery?

Preparing for plastic surgery involves several important steps:

  1. Understand the Procedure: Learn about the surgery, its risks, benefits, and recovery process. Seek information from your surgeon and reliable sources.
  2. Medical Evaluation: Undergo a thorough medical assessment to determine your suitability for the surgery. This may include tests and scans.
  3. Quit Smoking and Adjust Medications: Quit smoking ahead of the surgery to aid healing. Follow your surgeon's instructions regarding medications that may increase risks.
  4. Arrange for Support: Depending on the procedure, you may need assistance during the initial recovery days. Arrange for someone to accompany you and stay with you.
  5. Plan for Recovery: Prepare your home with the necessary supplies, medications, comfortable clothing, and healthy meals. Follow post-operative care instructions and restrictions on activities.
  6. Emotional Preparation: Have realistic expectations and be prepared for potential physical and emotional changes. Discuss your goals and concerns with your surgeon.
  7. Follow Pre-Surgery Instructions: Adhere to specific instructions provided by your surgeon, such as fasting and avoiding certain products.
  8. Communicate Openly: Maintain open communication with the medical team and address any questions or concerns throughout the process.

Remember, these are general guidelines. Always follow your surgeon's specific instructions for your unique situation.

What medications/vitamins should I take Pre-op & Post-op?

For preoperative preparation, it is recommended that you start taking the following vitamins three months before your surgery and continue for three months after your surgery:

  • Vitamin C: Take 1000mg once a day.
  • Folic acid: Take 800mcg once a day.
  • Vitamin B12: Take 1000mcg once a day.
  • Iron: Take 64mg three times a day.

If you have a vitamin D deficiency, it is advised to take 2000 IU of vitamin D once a day. Additionally, during your preoperative appointment, you will be provided with a one-week supply of Arnica pills. These pills are intended to help reduce swelling and bruising.

How does anesthesia work?

Anesthesia uses drugs to induce unconsciousness, block pain signals, and relax muscles during surgery. General anesthesia is utilized for all surgeries, where drugs are administered intravenously and inhaled to render the patient unconscious and unresponsive to pain. Local anesthesia, such as an Exparel shot, involves directly applying or injecting anesthetics to numb a smaller, localized area.

These drugs affect the central nervous system, disrupting nerve signals and altering neurotransmitter activity. Anesthesia ensures patient comfort and safety during surgical procedures.

Can I continue to take my medication?

The medical questionnaire should include all the medications you are currently taking. After reviewing the questionnaire, our medical team will guide when you should discontinue any medication before undergoing surgery. It is imperative that you inform the medical team of any changes in your medication.

Do I need blood work?

At Top Aesthetics, we prioritize the safety of our patients above all else. Before undergoing any surgery, obtaining medical clearance from your healthcare provider is crucial. This process typically involves undergoing blood tests. To get started, we will email you a link to complete a comprehensive medical questionnaire. Once you have completed and submitted the form, you will receive a lab order and clearance form via email. These documents should be taken to your doctor or clinic for completion and then faxed or emailed back to us, along with the medical clearance. We kindly ask that you complete and submit all the necessary paperwork at least four weeks before your scheduled surgery.

What are some of the complications that can occur after surgery?

After undergoing surgery, it's important to be aware of the potential risks associated with the recovery process. One such risk is the development of blood clots, specifically deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). While these complications may not always be directly caused by the surgical procedure, they can pose a significant threat, particularly if you have a pre-existing condition. To minimize the risk, early mobility plays a crucial role in preventing the formation of blood clots. By recognizing the importance of early mobility and following the advice of healthcare professionals, you can significantly reduce the likelihood of developing these complications. Remember to stay proactive, communicate your medical history, and take appropriate measures to promote circulation and prevent blood clots during your post-surgical journey.

Note: This information should not replace professional medical advice. If you have specific concerns or questions, consult your healthcare provider.

What should I do to achieve the best results from my surgery?

To optimize your surgical outcome and promote a smooth recovery process, we recommend following these guidelines:

  1. Follow post-operative instructions: It is crucial to carefully adhere to all the instructions provided by your medical team. This may include guidelines for wound care, medication usage, physical activity restrictions, and any specific precautions related to your surgery.
  2. Lymphatic drainage massages: Consider continuing lymphatic drainage massages as recommended by your medical team. These massages can help reduce swelling, bruising, and promote the natural drainage of your lymphatic system. They can also aid in preventing fibrosis, a condition where excess scar tissue forms.
  3. Garment usage: It is recommended to wear any compression garments or supportive devices as your surgeon instructs. Typically, wearing these garments for a minimum of six months can contribute to optimal results by supporting the surgical area and aiding in proper healing.

Remember to consult your healthcare provider regarding any concerns or questions during recovery. They will provide you with personalized guidance based on your specific surgery and individual needs.

How do we position our bodies after surgery?

In the initial three days following your surgery, it is highly recommended to sleep in a recliner. If you do not have access to a recliner or do not plan to acquire one, you can elevate your body using pillows to create a nearly upright position. Proper positioning is crucial for your comfort and optimal healing during the early stages of recovery.

How do I manage my drains?

After your tummy tuck procedure, managing the fluids your body produces by using a drain is important. Our dedicated recovery assistant will provide you and your companion with detailed instructions on how to manage the drain during your recovery period properly. Typically, the drain must remain in place for approximately three weeks. In the event that you are unable to come to our office for drain removal due to being out of town, we offer a convenient solution. You can schedule a video call with our experienced Registered Nurse, who will provide step-by-step guidance through face-to-face communication. This allows you to receive the necessary support and care even if you're not physically present at the clinic.

What diet should I follow after surgery?

Following surgery, it is important to maintain a healthy BMI for optimal results. Before surgery, avoid consuming herbal teas and fat burners, as they can increase the risk of bleeding and complications. Omega 3 supplements should also be discontinued. Ensure to inform your surgeon about any medications and dietary supplements you are taking. After surgery, it is recommended to follow a balanced anti-inflammatory diet with an emphasis on high protein intake should be maintained.

Avoid alcohol consumption, as it can lead to weight gain and interfere with medication. Following these dietary guidelines will support your recovery and help achieve the best possible outcomes.
